Standards and Expectations of Service, Leadership, and Character
Service
Service is generally considered to be those actions taken by the student which are done with or on behalf of others without any direct financial or materials compensation to the individual performing the service. In considering service, the contributions the student has made to school, classmates, and the community shall be considered.
The Student who Serves:
- Volunteers and provides dependable and well organized assistance, is gladly available and is willing to sacrifice to provide assistance.
- Works wells with others and is willing to take on difficult tasks
- Readily does committee work
- Participates in service outside of school
- Mentors persons in the community or students at schools
- Shows courtesy by assisting visitors, teachers and students
Requirements of Service for NHS Members:
- Each member of the NHS shall complete a minimum of 20 service hours for each calendar year they are a member
- Members will keep track of their service hours using the Service and Leadership Log. This will be submitted to the NHS advisor no later than the third Friday of May each year.
Examples of Service:
- Volunteer for a nonprofit organization such as:
- March of Dimes
- The Humane Society
- Beckman Mill
- Habitat for Humanity
- The Red Cross
- The United Way
- Local Food Pantry
- Special Olympics
- The American Cancer Society
- Tutoring students at either the elementary or Jr/Sr High School level
- Service to School Faculty
- Assisting with the yearly American Cross Blood Drive
- Providing child care during Parent/Teacher conferences
- Volunteer for Concession stand at Parkview events
- Church and youth group activities that benefit the community
- Club activities that perform service for a community organization
Examples of Activities that DO NOT count as service:
- Student managing of Athletic Teams
- Involvement in school/community/church musicals or plays.
- Helping family and friends with chores such as shoveling, cutting the lawn, running errands. It is your obligation as a friend or famiy member to help out.
- Anything you are paid for or are normally paid for.
- Working at your job for free.
- Campaign efforts for political candidates. This is a civic duty.
Leadership
The leadership criterion is highly important for membership selection and retention. Leadership can be in terms of offices held in school or community organizations. Leadership also exists in the school as a whole, in the classroom and in extracurricular activities as well as within the community.
The Student who Leads:
- Is resourceful in proposing solutions to problems, applying principles, and making suggestions.
- Demonstrates initiative in promoting school activities.
- Exercises positive influence on peers in upholding school ideals.
- Exemplifies positive attitudes.
- Inspires positive behavior in others
- Demonstrates academic initiative.
- Successfully holds school offices or positions of responsibility; consucts business effectively and efficiently; demonstrates reliablity and dependability.
- Is a leader in the classroom, at work, and in other school or community activities.
- Is thoroughly dependable in any responsibility accepted.
Requirements of Leadership for NHS Members:
- Each member of the NHS shall provide proof of leadership on a yearly basis. This shall be recorded on the Service and Leadership Log. This must be in at least two of the following categories.
- Hold an elected office within a school or community organization.
- Take a leadership role in one of the NHS Service projects.
- Provide an affidavit from a teacher or coach.
- Provide an affidavit from an employer attesting to the leadersip skills of the member.
Character
A person of character demonstrates the following qualities: respect, responsibility, trustworthiness, fairness, caring and citizenship.
A Student with High Standards of Character:
- Take criticism willingly and accepts recommendations graciously.
- Consistently exemplifies desirable qualities of behaviour (cheerfulness, friendliness, poise and stability).
- Cooperates by complying with school regulations.
- Demonstrates the highest standards of honestly and reliability.
- Regularly shows courtesy, concern, and respect for others.
- Observes instructions and rules, is punctual and faithfun both inside and outside the classroom.
- Has powers of concentration, self-discipline, and perserverance.
- Manifests truthfulness in acknowledging obedience to rules.
- Sets an example for the student body.
Requirements of Character for NHS Members
- Members of the NHS must exhibit the above qualities of character consistently and with intent.
- Members of the NHS must abide by the standards of conduct in the Parkview Student Handbook and the Parkview Activities Code at all times.
